Video Game Research Participation Opportunity

Control your game play with your mind!

In your Fragapalooza registration packet (At the event itself) will be a short questionnaire which you can fill out and if you qualify you can participate in a brief research study using biofeedback equipment as the game controller. All those who qualify and participate will be entered into a $100 draw. This video game research is going on throughout Fragapalooza in Room 2203 of the Mayfield Trade Centre. If you lost your questionnaire you can pick one up outside the research room. Return all questionnaires to the red box in the registration area.

In addition, if you are curious about what psychological research has found out about game play and players you can attend a free lecture by video game researcher, Dr. Jayne Gackenbach of the Department of Psychology at Grant MacEwan College. Dr. Gackenbach is the author the recently released cyber.rules: What You Really Need to Know about the Internet - The Essential Guide for Clinicians, Educators and Parents. She is also the editor of a more scholarly book on the same topic, Psychology and the Internet. She has been conducting research into video game players for almost a decade and is especially interested in the effects on consciousness. It turns out that video game play has many positive as well as some potential negative effects. Get informed about these at her free lectures in room 2203. The lectures are scheduled for Thursday, July 26th at 4 pm, Friday, July 27th at 1 and 6 pm, Saturday, July 28th at 1 and 6 pm, and Sunday, July 29th at 1 pm. Each lecture will be about 40 minutes with lots of time for questions following the lecture. Her cyber.rules book will also be available for purchase. She can be reached at gackenbachj@macewan.ca.

And here I was thinking the Wii was going to be wierd to play... so what, tighten my muscles to move left, eat lots of sugar to lower my blood pressure and target, then break into a sweat to fire?

As a Macewan student, I took part in her previous research, which was geared towards the effects video games have on dreams and or dreaming. It was an interesting time, and I got to share some of my experiences through gaming with her.

I'll most likely be attending this lecture, this biofeedback stuff looks pretty interesting.
