Hey,

Does any body have the tool to open an Xbox 360 saftey. I'm trying to figure out if my xbox is dying or a fan died or something.

I'm getting pixelation or pixel tearing, like what you may see from overclocking a video card too far or heat excursion on a gfx card, then the console freezes.

no red ring of death.

I am guess it is a sort of heat issue, because the longer I play, the more often it happens... to the point it freezes at the Dashboard.

I owned this Xbox since 6 months after the console release (February 2003 i think), I am expecting it to fail soon, but if it's a simple fan replacement or a good cleaning or re-applying some thermal paste, I figure it's worth a try.

And the tool should you need it:

Google is really good for stuff like this ;)

Thanks for the info.

Can any comment if this is a hardware failure?

That is exactly what mine started doing before it went RRoD.

Basically either the VRAM or the GPU is starting to separate from the motherboard. You can do an x-clip mod to see if you can fix it, but it's doubtful that it will.

I know a couple people who add xclips to xboxs and it fixes the RROD 90% of the time

If they catch the problem early, it may fix it. Once the damage to the motherboard is done, there is no fixing it.

Correct - it just delays the RROD for a little bit longer. (I know a few who have had RROD errors and then done the X-Clip mod, and a few months later, RROD again).

Thanks for all the advice. I may tackle the X-clip mod, but I bought an Arcade edition from Best Buy for $130.

I have this same problem with one, it's probably the GPU, I fixed this problem just by taking the stupid xclip off and putting proper thermal paste on. However that doesn't last long (about 5min at a time), need to get the proper screws and washers in place should cure it for longer term.

Here's a good reference and place to buy these washers and such if your lazy like me and didn't want to hut for them.
